Session:TS 3: Oil Spill - the impact on the Environment & Waste Management
Topic:Current Major Worldwide Ongoing Pollution Incident – Not Oil?
Abstract (not more than 150 Words):
The purpose of the presentation is to raise awareness of the current ongoing worldwide major pollution incident that is affecting our oceans in this present day which is namely through the misuse of common day-to-day plastics. The presentation will invite people to “think outside the box” of oil being generally regarded as major contribution of pollution of the oceans and raise awareness of the prevailing threat of plastics in the seas.
There is currently a large-scale disaster looming over our marine aquatic life due to the irresponsible use and disposal of plastic throughout the world. All over the world plastic pollution in oceans is a hot topic on social media and there are many initiatives and projects currently taking place to reduce the impact plastics have on sea life worldwide. Various governments, environmental agencies and public figures are campaigning to reduce the scourge of plastic in our oceans. Plastic pollution is not only affecting marine species but is also affecting the food chain and human life. It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. This has an impact on our generation and future generations and is our responsibility now to act.
The presentation will raise awareness of how plastic pollution is occurring, what the effects are on our environment right now and what is predicted in the future, how we can make small steps to personally reduce our plastic footprint and how we can assist in reducing the current levels of pollution.
