Abstract (not more than 150 Words):
We present case studies where satellite data were used to detect and track oil spills in the region. We would like to showcase the potential of satellite in the monitoring of environmental hazards like oil spills and red tides. We also show that a synergy between satellite images and numerical hydrodynamic models could enhance the overall capability of any detection and alerting system. We also highlight the importance of coupling the detection and the tracking with accurate weather data to model the trajectory of the oil as well as its weathering. A holistic approach is needed to address the issue of oil spills in the region for a prompt detection, accurate tracking, and environmental impact determination.
